My mini-reviews of 2023 | NetGalley Edition

I have been absolutely terrible at keeping this blog updated with my reviews, especially my ARC reviews, so I thought I would do a quick round-up of said reviews (some of which are just a quick ramble of my thoughts because I’ve been a lazy girl these last two years) of 2023 with a Netgalley edition — this is also so I don’t feel too bad about my abysmal attempts at reviewing my ARCs on the blog. Enjoy, and let me know your thoughts on any of these books in the comments!

My mini-reviews of 2023

The Ones We’re Meant to Find by Joan He

The Ones We’re Meant To Find is a beautiful and powerful novel about sisterhood and humanity. As usual, Joan He delivers a clever, thought-provoking, and unpredictable novel. There is such emotional depth to the story and the characters – it’s such a character-driven story, but the world-building and science fiction element doesn’t suffer either. Amazing novel.

Dead Space by Kali Wallace

Dead Space is a tense science fiction novel that takes place in a remote mining station. Hester has been sent to investigate a murder of an old colleague. I really love intense sci-fi and this ended up being a good one – plenty of twists and turns, artificial intelligence, and bad corporations. Highly recommend if you’re a fan of science fiction.

The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton

The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle is a magical mystery following an investigation into a woman named Evelyn Hardcastle, who is murdered every night at 11pm. Our main character is a man called Aiden Bishop, who soon discovers he is occupying the body of a guest of the party, and every day he switches bodies to a different guest to repeat the same day, in order to uncover different evidence from another point of view.

The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle is one of my first books this year. I’ve been in a nine-month reading slump. Wild. It’s a unique and riveting murder mystery surrounded by a separate magical mystery. It’s also a book about human nature, secrets, and choices.

“So many memories and secrets, so many burdens. Every life has such weight. I don’t know how anybody carries even one.”

The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle is a complex book with a complex plot but I did really enjoy seeing it all come together. It’s truly a clever book. Our main character Aiden is likable and I enjoyed reading from his POV, the guests he inhabits are not quite as likable which made for an interesting read, the two personalities clashing.

If you are a fan of mysteries, then I would highly recommend it.

Megan (pronounced MEE-GAN bc her Irish grandfather refused to use the English pronunciation) is a 27 year old british blogger, history graduate, lover of books and expert procrastinator. She is anxious and introverted and is currently attempting adulthood. She predominantly reads and reviews YA, but loves a good adult book. Enjoys genres such as historical fiction, science fiction, fantasy, contemporary. Always on the look out for more sapphic books. She loves reading about unlikeable female characters, positive female friendships & relationships, and is a sucker for a pretty cover.

What I’ve Read So Far This Year (PART TWO) | JULY 2023

So because I had a two-hiatus from blogging and reviewing and just generally reading, I didn’t have a lot of ARCs to read, and I purposely kept my ARC pile low so that I could focus on reading for pure enjoyment without the stress of reviewing. Because of this, I’ve managed to read books that I’ve just wanted to read, not because I needed to. And I focused on just writing mini-reviews instead of in-depth reviews, just to get my immediate thoughts and feelings down. These are all on Goodreads, where I do most of my reviewing these days (just to keep it casual), and I’m just putting them here too just in case you care!

The Scapegracers follows Sideways, a lesbian witch, who finds herself the newest member of the popular clique after the magic they performed together at the Halloween party proves to be pretty epic. What follows are some seriously weird occurrences, such as: dead deer, curses on nasty boys, a family of deadly witch hunters, a mysterious and bewitching girl, and a hidden family history. Together, these girls battle their foes and a lasting bond forms.

Sapphic Books We Want to Read

We have read so many great sapphic books this year, such as The Space Between Worlds, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, The Midnight Lie, and just so many more. But it is never enough. Everyday, more and more sapphic books gets added to our TBR and we just don’t have time to read all of them. So we thought we would do a post of sapphic books that require our most immediate attention, and books that we are super excited to get our hands on, and books that aren’t out yet but we really need.

Book recommendations: 8 post-apocalyptic books

So, I did this post way before this whole pandemic business came about and it has just sat in my drafts for months, so this post may hit a *little* close to home at the moment, but if you want a post-apocalyptic novel to take your mind off our own pandemic, I’ve got you covered. Post-apocalyptic is not a genre I read very widely in which is strange because I absolutely adore post-apotcalyptic stories. Maybe it is because it is sometimes a genre that is a little oversaturated with, yeah you guessed it, zombies! While I do love a good zombie story as much as the next person, sometimes I just want something a little different. Below is a list of some of our favourite post-apocalyptic novels:
